US Open day 2 recap: Nadal and Halep's wins, layoffs and Murray

The US Open always offers surprises, emotions and certainties. Certainties: the victories of Rafael Nadal, Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Bianca Andreescu. Surprises: the disappointing eliminations of Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tistsipas, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza.

Emotions: Cori Gauff's first victory at Flushing Meadows. The Argentinian chair umpire Damian Steiner, who arbitrated the 2019 Wimbledono final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic was fired! Steiner, in Argentina, released several statements to the local media without ATP authorization.

According to the ATP statement, Steiner in addition to not asking for authorization to interviews, also discussed topics that are almost forbidden in the organization's guidelines. Andy Murray came back to win a match in the men's singles.

He did it at the Rafa Nadal Challenger of Mallorca. Murray hadn't won a men's singles match since 2019 January 1st, 2019, in the first round of Brisbane against James Duckworth. Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens are the new top-20 representatives at the WTA Player Council.

The two American players replace Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka. On day 3 Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will be back on the court for the second round of the US Open 2019.
