2019 is a positive year for Gael Monfils. The Frenchman won his 8th career title, the second in an ATP 500. Overall, his was a good season. After the defeat in the second round at the Australian Open, Monfils achieved good placings during the year, like the semi-final in Sofia, the victory in Rotterdam, the semi-final in Dubai, the quarters at Indian Wells, the fourth round at the French Open, the semifinal at the Rogers Cup and the quarter-finals at the US Open.
At 33 years, he reached this year a good maturity on the court, which allowed him to play a good level of tennis throughout the year, although during the spring he had some problems due to the usual injuries. In short, this season he seems improved, and under some aspects.
But is the maturity of Frenchman the result of the advancing age and a new vision of tennis or is it due to the relationship with his colleague Elina Svitolina? Surely the love story with Svitolina could have brought new stability and confidence in La Monf's tennis, helping him in some moments of the season which, in the recent past he would certainly have achieved inferior results.
The advancing age certainly brings benefits to tennis players, and we've seen this happen with many of his colleagues in recent years. There are greater awareness and less pressure: translated Gael expresses even better tennis, more continuous, more solid and more effective.
All aspects which in the past was his wicked points. Physical problems are a constant in his professional life, but if the application is the same even in 2020, then he can still get more satisfaction from his career.
