Sofia Kenin: Solidity, determination and quality

2019 showed us all the enormous improvements made by Sofia Kenin. The American, only twenty-one years old, played a super season, during which she won three titles in four finals played, she made semifinals at the Rogers Cup and in Cincinnati and got her best ranking, at the number 15 of the WTA ranking.

All this was possible thanks to her solidity, her determination, her quality and her sparkling behavior, which in some matches gave her the antipathy of the crowd. The titles came in Hobart, Mallorca and Canton, respectively against Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, Belinda Bencic and Samantha Stosur.

The defeat arrived in Acapulco against Wang Yafan. She showed very solid and consistent tennis, which fits well on fast surfaces (she won two titles on hard-courts and one on grass-courts). Her attacking game blends well with a good defensive phase from the baseline (despite she has to improve this skill), making Kenin a complete player.

In 2020, she can also get other improvements, especially in the defensive phase, essential to be competitive even in the clay-court tournaments, which today are still her weak point. She will also have to make improvements in the Slam tournaments, but the young age is on her side.

With Sofia Kenin (and also with Amanda Anisimova and Cori Gauff), the USA has secured a great future in women's tennis, putting already very strong players at the highest levels, ensuring at least another ten or fifteen years of successes and a generational change functioning, complete and effective.
