How can we evaluate Karen Khachanov's season? Was it positive or not? Last year, the Russian won three titles, including the Rolex Paris Masters. This year, after what was seen in 2018, many expected the definitive qualitative leap and, from a certain point of view, Khachanov did not disappoint the expectations, even if we have to make some considerations.
The positive aspects. Three, above all. The quarter-finals at the French Open, where he lost against the eventual finalist Dominic Thiem after a good tournament. The entry into the top-10 of the ATP Ranking, up to the eighth position, obtained on 2019 July 8th.
The semifinals obtained at the Rogers Cup and at the China Open and the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. The negative aspects. Compared to 2018, the year in which he won three titles, Khachanov has not won any tournament this season.
Surely this is a step back compared to 2019. On the hard-courts, he didn't express the tennis that many expected. Finally, the Russian wasn't able to maintain the top-10 of the ATP Ranking, failing to defend the title won last year in Paris-Bercy and falling to 17th position.
In general, his season has experienced positive moments and negative moments, where the ups and downs have been the main theme. Despite this, he reached some important goals, but in 2020 he will have to raise his level to compete with the best.
Meanwhile, he became a father, a situation that can positively influence a tennis player, and this can be seen in 2020. I would also like to state the last consideration: together with Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, Russia has found a formidable team for the Davis Cup.
