Naomi Osaka was ready to dominate the WTA Tour after winning the Australian Open. Instead, a series of problems limited her performances from February to the US Open, tournament after which her level started to rise again. An emptiness of eight months, during which fame and pression played a fundamental role in the season of the young Japanese.
Yet the 22-years-old had the strength to regain confidence and motivation, coming back to victory first in Tokyo and then in the important Premier Mandatory China Open, where she defeated the world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the final.
Then the injury at the WTA Finals that forced her to leave the tournament after the first round robin match. Probably Osaka will collaborate from 2020 with Wim Fissette, former coach of Simona Halep, Sabine Lisicki, Angelique Kerber and Kim Clijsters.
A collaboration that will surely bring something positive to the Naomi's team. The Japanese have a very important year ahead, during which she will have to confirm her qualities and take another step forward. Not only from the technical and physical point of view, but above all from the mental point of view: she will have to manage popularity and pressure better, without getting devoured by the greed that, in 2019, caused her to lose almost eight months.
Also Osaka will have the Olympic Games right in Tokyo, in front of her home-crowd. She is, together with Ashleigh Barty and Bianca Andreescu one of the three young tennis players already able to aspire to the role of tennis queen.
Andreescu and Barty are at this time of half a step ahead; Osaka will have to try to stay at the same speed as the two rivals, because the imminent future of women tennis belongs to them.
