US Open 2020 - Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Serena Williams: who will play and who won't

For one reason or another, many stars will give up playing the upcoming and highly anticipated US Open 2020: among the many there will not be Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep , Elina Svitolina and Bianca Andreescu.

Who for one reason, who for another. As we know Roger Federer will come back directly on the court for the Australian Open 2021, after the double surgery on his right knee, which forced him to skip the rest of 2020. A decision taken, however, especially after the cancellation of Wimbledon and Tokyo Olympics, the his two main goals for this (and next season).

However, the main reason why many tennis players decided to skip the US Open (and the Western and Souther Open) is related to the safety conditions in the American metropolis. In fact, in the USA we are witnessing day after day a dramatic count of Covid-19 cases, both infected and dead.

Fear, despite the stringent rules of the bubble in Flushing Meadows, made many stars think, who decided to skip both tournaments organized at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In the men's singles, in addition to the absences of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, there will also be no Gael Monfils.

Out also Stan Wawrinka and Nick Kyrgios. Wawrinka will focus on European clay-court tournaments (he will play the Prague Challenger) while Kyrgios has yet to decide which tournaments to play. Out also the Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lucas Pouille: Tsonga perhaps for his problems with travel, Pouille for physical problems in the elbow.

The presence of Kei Nishikori, who tested positive for Covid-19 is in strong doubt. There will be Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem, Matteo Berrettini and world no.1 Novak Djokovic.

The dramatic situation of the US Open women's singles

In the women's singles the situation is more dramatic.

Ashleigh Barty, world no.1, already declared for a few weeks that she would not play the US Open: there are still too many problems related to health security in New York. More or less the same decision taken by Simona Halep, winner of the Prague tournament, who announced her absence from Flushing Meadows via social media.

Out also Elina Svitolina, who decided not to fly to New York because of all the health problems related to the global pandemic, and Bianca Andreescu, defending champion, who will miss the American Slam for some physical problems (and probably for the health conditions faced from the USA).

There will not be in New York also Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic, already projected for the tournaments that will be played in Europe. Sofia Kenini, Karolina Pliskova, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams should be the stars of women's singles if the health situation doesn't worsen and if they confirm their decision to participate in the tournament.
