There will be no Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty in the women's singles final of the Roland Garros 2020, but Iga Swiatek and Sofia Kenin promise an unprecedented, young, fresh and perhaps technically very valid challenge.
We expect an intense and fun match, gritty and attacking. Two young rockers ready to take on an important stage like that of the Parisian Slam. On her way to the final, Swiatek was especially credited with beating Simona Halep (the big favorite on the eve of the tournament) in the fourth round.
Then more or less uncomfortable opponents like Markete Vondrousova and Eugenie Bochard, and real surprises, like Martina Trevisan and Nadia Podoroska. Kenin, from the fourth round onwards, had problems with Fiona Ferro and Danielle Collins, only to crash Petra Kvitova in two sets.
"It all seems so unreal. On the one hand, I am aware that I can play at a high level, but on the other hand I never thought I could fight for a Grand Slam. This is pure madness. The key to my success was to believe. in myself.
I knew I had a chance to win. It is not easy to believe that this is happening to me. After the tournament, I will stop for a moment to reflect on everything that has happened to me. Now I don't want to stop and think, I want just focus on tomorrow's doubles match.
I know winning the title will be difficult and that I still have a long way to go. In front of me I will have an opponent who has played matches of this type before," said the Pole ina press conference.
Sofia Kenin and Iga Swiatek: un unprecedent challenge
Kenin is currently more experienced, despite her 22 years-old.
In fact, the American has already won a Grand Slam final, this year at the Australian Open against Garbine Muguruza. From the match lost against Azarenka with a double 6-0 (in 29 minutes) at the Italian Open, a real life seems to have passed.
Today Sofia is deservedly in the final. By winning, she would be the real star of the WTA Tour 2020, an unprecedented and particular season, for what happened with the global COVID-19 pandemic. Swiatek will have her chances.
Sparkling tennis, irresistible enthusiasm and a true champion mentality, despite her young age. In the tournament she showed physical, technical and tactical qualities worthy of the most experienced athletes. But a Grand Slam final is another matter.
The pressure and expectations will be different: will the Pole be able to handle emotions? The absence of the crowd may perhaps help her a little. Perhaps Kenin has a small advantage, deriving from her previous experience in managing situations in a Grand Slam.
However, it will be a balanced and hopefully spectacular match. The unexplored world of Iga Swiatek and Sofia Kenin! Roland Garros 2020: women's singles final percentages Sofia Kenin 51% Iga Swiatek 49%
