Wimbledon 2021 preview: Serena Williams' last chance for the Slam record

The women's singles at Wimbledon 2021 could have very different results from what one imagines, and this for several factors at stake: for Serena Williams this will perhaps be the last, great opportunity to try to win her 24th Slam and equal the record.

which still belongs to Margaret Smith. Yet, after the massacre of seeds that we saw a few weeks ago at Roland Garros making a prediction, especially on grass-courts, it becomes really fun and not trivial. Simona Halep, defending champion, who had also given up in Paris, will not be able to defend the title in London due to a calf injury.

Naomi Osaka is also absent. Ashleigh Barty, who never made it past the fourth round cut at the Championships, leads the draw. The Australian world no.1 is on a collision course with Carla Suarez Navarro, back on the WTA Tour in Paris.

Relatively comfortable draw for world number one, who could find Barbora Krejcikova in the round of 16 and Viktoria Azarenka or Bianca Andreescu in the quarter-finals. Serena Williams, chasing the eighth title on the lawns of Church Road and above all the record Slam, should not represent a problem Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round, but could hypothetically create difficulties for Angelique Kerber in the 4th round.

Also possible a 4th round against Cori Gauff, called to break down the wall of Belinda Bencic. In the bottom-half, Aryna Sabalenka could find Maria Sakkari in the 4th round and Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals. There are, on the same side of the draw, also Karolina Pliskova, Petra Kvitova and Iga Swiatek.

The great protagonist will be the grass-courts: experience will be fundamental in these fortnights, and the winner will have to overcome nervous breakdowns, pressure and a surface on which it will be difficult to adapt. So, as mentioned, considering the absences and the playing surface, which is congenial to her, this year Serena Williams will have the last great chance of her career to achieve this milestone.

Grass-courts could favor the tennis of Barty and Andreescu, who however have too little experience and confidence on this surface. Considering Karolina Pliskova's Grand Slam allergy, here's how experienced and already winning Chruch Road tennis players like Muguruza, Kvitova and Kerber could take advantage of many situations in their favor.

Aryna Sabalenka would have the tennis to achieve something good, but the general feeling is that this year her victory will go to the most experienced. Few chances for Iga Swiatek, who still hasn't found the right feeling with the grass-courts.

The big surprise? Cori Gauff. Despite her improvements on clay-courts, the young American star is one of the most anticipated tennis players at the All England Club. Wimbledon 2021 percentages Serena Williams 20%, Barty 20% Andreescu 20% Kovitova 20% Muguruza 20%
Outsiders: Angelique Kerber, Cori Gauff.
