Tennis: Japan and Kazakhstan earned victories on Day 2 of the Asia/Oceania Group 1 matches as it was expected but there was an upset, as South Korea stunned Uzbekistan. Second seeds Thailand were also beaten by hosts China.
37-year-old veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, who had made her Fed Cup debut 22 years back, had earned a win over Chinese Taipei on the Day 1, but against World No.64 Shuai Zhang she went down in 3 sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. China's Qiang Wang won her singles match in straight sets and even though Thailand won the doubles, China won the tie 2-1.
Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova and Zarina Diyas got victories in the singles once again. Shvedova won her match easily but Zarina Diyas was taken to the wire by Su-Wei Hsieh. Diyas won it 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Much lower ranked players of South Korea stunned Uzbekistan 2-1 whereas Japan defeated Hong Kong 3-0 to remain on top of their group.
