What a fight for the ATP ranking no.1: here are the crazy scenarios!
What a fight for the ATP ranking no.1: here are the crazy scenarios!

In Paris, the race isn't just for the Grand Slam title. In this edition of the Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic is looking for number 23, to detach Rafael Nadal and embark on a solitary race. Carlos Alcaraz for the first Grand Slam title on red clay after the Us Open.

Daniil Medvedev to follow in the footsteps of the Spaniard. Stefanos Tsitsipas to capture first Grand Slam title. It's not just the trophy that attracts: these four players are in contention to be the world number one in the rankings.

Four different scenarios, with the tennis player from Murcia and the Russian one clearly ahead of the others. Should Carlos Alcaraz win the French Open title, he would be sure to keep the top spot. Even the final would guarantee him to keep that position, unless Medvedev is on the other side of the net: in this case, it would be that last act that decides who will be number one in the world.

For the two champions in Flushing Meadows, the hypotheses are different to reach a goal that both have already achieved, while for Djokovic and Tsitsipas the opportunities are less.

The scenarios of Djokovic and Tsitsipas

For the 22 times Grand Slam champion, only two scenarios would allow him to return to being number one in the world.

Should he win the Paris Grand Slam title, regardless of the results of his rivals; should he reach the final, unless Alcaraz reaches the quarterfinals or Medvedev the semifinal of the tournament. For the Greek tennis player, still looking for Grand Slam victory after two finals, the situation is even more improbable: a single hypothesis would allow him to reach the top of the ranking.

The number four in the world needs to win the title, but Alcaraz also needs to not reach the fourth round or that Medvedev doesn't reach the semifinals of the Grand Slam tournament. Different scenarios, four protagonists, but only one goal: to be number one in the world.

We also recall that this is the first edition of the French Open after the retirement of Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Rafa is out for the whole season; he could come back for the Australian Open 2024.
