Daniil Medvedev has been considered for some years as one of the most competitive tennis players on the ATP Tour. His only slam so far, won two years ago at the US Open, also allowed him to reach the primacy in the ranking, ahead of tennis players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
The Russian has also won 5 ATP Masters 1000, including two this season (Miami and Rome). His 2023 has so far been second only to the Serbian and Carlos Alcaraz. In addition to two 1000 titles, Daniil has also won Doha Rotterdam and Dubai.
On the other hand, his path in the last two Grand Slams, the Roland Garros and WImbledon, was disappointing, where he sensationally stopped against Seyboth Wild, in Paris, and in London against the eventual winner of the Alcaraz tournament, in the semifinals.
The current world number three is engaged in the National Bank Open in Toronto, a title he already won in 2021. The Russian was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Alex De Minaur. In the penultimate match played, however, the native of Moscow got rid of the Italian Lorenzo Musetti with the result of 6-4 6-4, following an incredible streak of positive results against Italian tennis players.
Medvedev a nightmare of Italian tennis players
A fact that immediately catches the eye when you take a look at the precedents against Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, Fabio Fognini and precisely Musetti.
There have been 6 precedents against Sinner. The first played in Marseille, when the Italian number one was just 19 years old. The last in chronological order played a few months ago in Florida, where Daniil prevailed in straight sets.
Against Berrettini things do not change. 3 wins to 0 for the former champion in Flushing Meadows, of which two in Australia, at the ATP Cup. Medvedev also leads 2-0 against Sonego. Even the Piedmontese tennis player had to give up in the previous two in Adelaide and Monte-Carlo, both played this season.
Fognini is the only Italian who can say he beat the former world number one at least once back in 2018, in Cincinnati. Since then there have been other challenges between them, all the preserve of the Russian
