Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz were undoubtedly the strongest tennis players of 2023. I'm not saying it, it's not just the titles that say it, it's also (and above all) data, records and statistics that say it. The Serbian and the Spaniard are respectively no.1 and no.2 in the ATP ranking, and have experienced a season full of satisfactions and titles: just think that the two of them won all 4 Slam titles up for grabs.
The Serbian has won almost everything he could win, missing only the Wimbledon title, which would have allowed him to own virtually all the Slams, plus the ATP Finals, this season. The one who ruined his plans was the young Spanish tennis player himself, who in a final full of emotions took home his second Major, this time on the London lawns.
The two champions, together with Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, have shown that they have something more than all their opponents, winning almost all the trophies up for grabs this year. There is one statistic, however, that rewards only Djokovic and Alcaraz, giving credit to their mental strength and positive attitude in the face of difficulties.
In fact, they are the only two tennis players with a positive balance after losing the first set: Nole has a score of 8-5, Carlitos 9-7. An impressive data, that demonstrates their resilience in the face of adversity.
And their challenge will resume in 2024
A few days Carlitos sent a message to his rival in view of next season.
"Djokovic has shown that he is ready to win the Grand Slam, but we are here to stop him and I want to become one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. It's never easy playing against Djokovic, it's not easy for any of us.
But having won on two occasions was an indescribable joy, it gave me great confidence. I hope to share this rivalry in the future too and play many more matches against him, because he is wonderful," he told.
