Tennis - Former world no. 1 Maria Sharapova, now ranked no. 7, scored a straight sets win over Japan"s Kurumi Nara to advance to the third round of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami on Thursday night. Sharapova, who lost early in Indian Wells, came from a break down to beat Nara 63 64.

The Russian is yet to get back to her best after missing most of the second half of the 2013 season due to a shoulder injury. Speaking after her win, Sharapova commented, "She made me work extremely hard. She"s a really quick opponent, got a lot of balls back, as you saw, and she made me hit a lot.

She made me try to do too much in certain situations. Sometimes I felt like I was doing the right mistakes and sometimes I felt like I should have been more patient, but I guess those are the situations you want to build that match confidence again." The Russian next meets 26th seed Lucie Safarova, who beat American Vania King 63 76(2).
