Maria Sharapova starts the campaign in Mexico with a straight sets win

Tennis: World No.2 and top seed Maria Sharapova has started her campaign at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel WTA Tournament in Acapulco with a straight sets 6-4, 6-1 win over Shelby Rogers in the first round. The 28-year-old Russian was making her first appearance since losing to World No.1 Serena Williams in the final of the 2015 Australian Open Championships (although she had played Fed Cup for Russia in between).

She made sure that she did not stumble in her first WTA match after almost a month. This was also her debut in Acapulco. The 5-time Grand Slam champion was a little uncomfortable at the beginning, as she was broken in the first game of the match.

She was 1-3 down but then she broke back and levelled it at 3-3. She broke Rogers again in the 10th game to take the first set 6-4. The second set was even more easy for Sharapova as she did not let Rogers hold any of the serve and won the second set 6-1 to book her place in the second round.

She won 11 of the last 13 games of the match. Sharapova took 74 minutes in claiming the victory. She served 8 aces and 5 double faults, winning 70% points on the first serve and 55% on the second serve.
