The French Crowd Boo at Sick Maria Sharapova but She Understands...

She fought through sickness, pressure and a tough opponent like Kaia Kanepi in the first round. Maria Sharapova - defending champion and twice a winner at Roland Garros - got sick a week before the event.

The typical flew, coughing and cold that comes when you arrive in "summery" Paris during this time of the year. The Russian regrouped on time to be ready for the French Open and despite dealing with the last oddments of the virus, she found a way to come out on top and be victorious in straight sets.

Initially welcomed back as the queen of Paris, Maria had a sudden turnaround in her love and loyalty to the French crowd. Being still sick and not wanting to stay in the cold air blowing on the court all sweaty after the match, the Russian decided not to have the typical on-court interview and the French exploded.

The Court Philippe Chatrier booed the World No.2 on her way off the court. Asked on the mean in her press conference, Maria was straight forward. "I understand that I got booed. I don't want to justify my behavior or anything.

All players stay on court and answer a few questions at the end of matches. It's just that I have to do what I have to do" were Maria's words, who never had a doubt she would be competing today. "I mean, unless I am in my coffin, I am going to be out there!" Next for Sharapova will be her compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko.

Maria admitted not to know too much her next opponent. "I met her for the first time in Fed Cup last year, it was the very first time we had spent some time together. She is a big hitter and goes for her shots, but I didn't have a chance to practice with her.

What really matters anyways for me now is to focus on my game and not worry about the opponent too much". ALSO READ Gulbis reveals what he would have done in Roger Federer's situation .
