Roberta Vinci: 'A wild-card for Rome should have been given to Schiavone, not to Sharapova'

Roberta Vinci shared her opinion about Maria Sharapova a few weeks ago in Stuttgart before losing to the Russian player in straight sets. The Italian player admitted how she does not agree with Stuttgart, Madrid and also Rome tournaments giving wild cards to Sharapova.

And in press conference at the Foro Italico ahead of her match against another Russian, Ekaterina Makarova, she spoke about Francesca Schiavone, who was denied a wild card. 'I am sorry that Francesca is not here. I do not want to remember all her results, but he know that were many and very important ones for Italian tennis: we are in Italy and I would have given wild cards to Italian players, not giving one to Sharapova.' Also Svetlana Kuznetsova spoke about Schiavone: 'I cannot criticize, because I don't know what was the decision, why they did not give her main-draw wildcard.

I understood she thought she's not get in to qualifying, so that's why she left to Miami, as I understood. But, yeah, for me, it's strange, and if it's like the last year Francesca plays, she's done so much for the Federation, for Italian tennis.

I think for fans, it's really sad not to see her in the main draw here playing. So it's a bit sad.' ALSO READ: WTA ENTRY LISTS: Kerber and probably Sharapova to play Birmingham, Garcia in Mallorca
