Russian tennis chief: 'Sharapova able to fight for Australian Open title'

Shamil Tarpischev, president of the Russian tennis federation, is confident Maria Sharapova can go far at the Australian Open which starts on Monday. Sharapova will make her debut against Tatjana Maria and in the third round she could possibly face Angelique Kerber.

'Sharapova’s draw looks normal and although there will be no easygoing games her tournament table is manageable and everything will depend on her', Tarpischev told TASS Agency. 'A lot will depend on the degree of fatigue and the psychological condition.' In October 2017 Sharapova won her first title in more than two years at the Tianjin Open.

'If she demonstrates a good game, just like she did in China at the end of the previous season, Maria will be able to fight for the victory', Tarpishchev added. 'Knowing her will and seeing how she regains her physical shape, I can say that Sharapova can fight for the elite.' ALSO READ: WTA Shenzhen - Sharapova upset by Siniakova! Halep advances .
