World number 54 Ajla Tomljanovic sent a tribute message to Maria Sharapova on Twitter, transmitting her gratefulness for meeting the recently retired Russian player two times in the last few months. “Congrats Maria Sharapova on an incredible career!
I was very happy that I got to share the court with you twice in the last few months. Your attitude and fighting spirit throughout your whole career was unmatched and will definitely be missed”. Tomljanovic tweeted. Maria Sharapova retired on 26th February after a legendary career during which she won 5 Grand Slams, becoming at the same time an example for many aspiring young tennis players.
“Tennis showed me the world—and it showed me what I was made of. It’s how I tested myself and how I measured my growth. And so in whatever I might choose for my next chapter, my next mountain, I’ll still be pushing.
I’ll still be climbing. I’ll still be growing”. Sharapova wrote to her worldwide fans on social media. Ajla Tomljanovic met Maria Sharapova for the first time in December 2019 at the Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament, where the Russian bagged the victory in straight sets (6/4 7/5).
Their second meeting took place a month after, during the Kooyong exhibition. This time, Tomljanovic triumphed after a tight 6/1 1/6 11/9. Maria Sharapova's last match before retirement was the 6/3 6/4 defeat against Donna Vekic in the first round of the 2020 Australian Open.
