Novak Djokovic to Juan Martin del Potro: You are the best amigo

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is hoping that former world No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro will soon return to the court. Del Potro, now ranked at No. 746 in the world, hasn't played since 2019. Throughout his career, del Potro hasn't had much luck with his health.

Meanwhile, Djokovic is preparing to kick off his campaign at the Tokyo Olympics. "Honored to play for my people and my country at the Olympics! Wheels up, see you in Tokyo," Djokovic wrote in an Instagram post.

In the comments, del Potro replied: "I'll be watching you! This time you have your chance amigo!" Djokovic's accepted del Potro's joke and replied: "You are the best amigo. I wish to see you back on the court soon even if you kick my ass every time we play."

Del Potro beat Djokovic in the past two Olympics

At the 2012 London Olympics, Djokovic lost to del Potro in the bronze medal match. Four years later at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Djokovic suffered a first round loss to del Potro.

As del Potro is still recovering from his surgery, he's forced to miss the Tokyo Olympics. Djokovic, who is one of the most accomplished players in tennis history, is aiming to win his maiden gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Although some players from the top are not coming, there are also a lot of elite players fighting for medals: (Daniil) Medvedev, (Stefanos) Tsitsipas and (Alex) Zverev are among the favourites. They are the best, but it is a long tournament and anything can happen," Djokovic said.

“Furthermore, Olympics are specific in terms of pressure, expectations and emotions – everything is different compared to other tournaments and I know that very well, I felt it on my own skin in the past. Therefore, I will try to approach the Olympics in the same way that I approach other tournaments, so that I can stay focused on my goal”.
