Former world No. 3 Juan Martin Del Potro says whoever plays smart a chance of winning the US Open and that's why Novak Djokovic is his favorite to win it all at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic, ranked at No. 1 in the world, is chasing tennis history at this year's US Open.
Djokovic, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, hasn't lost a match at the Grand Slam level this year. If Djokovic wins the US Open, he will complete a Calendar Grand Slam and become the first player since 1969 to win all four Majors in the same year.
Del Potro is present at this year's US Open and he was about his favorite for the title. "From my point of view, whoever plays smart has a chance to win the tournament. This is the reason why Novak is still here. He has experience, he has strong strokes and he is often very smart on the court.
But the other guys are also very strong," del Potro said, per We Love Tennis.
Djokovic compared Matteo Berrettini to del Potro
Djokovic will be fighting against Berrettini for a place in the US Open semifinal. In this past Wimbledon final, Djokovic recovered from a set down to beat Berrettini in four sets.
"Hammer of tennis. Next to del Potro, probably the hardest hitter of serve and forehand. He's got the lethal-serve-plus-one game. He's already established as a top player. Without a doubt, he played a couple of I think semifinals here couple years ago, finals in Wimbledon.
That was a tough four-setter," Djokovic said of Berrettini. "Look, if he serves well, which is his biggest weapon, he's tough. He's tough on any surface to play against. I've had some really close matches with him in French Open and Wimbledon recently.
"We're going to play the third Grand Slam in a row against each other. Hopefully the result will be the same like the previous two."
