'The incredible ovation Novak Djokovic received was...', says ATP legend

Novak Djokovic has not yet set foot on the pitch after the 2021 US Open final. The world number 1 had a truly exceptional season, but failed to put the icing on the cake. The Serbian phenomenon won the first three Slams of the year and pursued the dream of the 'Calendar Grand Slam'

Should he triumph in the Big Apple, the 34-year-old from Belgrade would become the second man in the Open Era after Rod Laver to win all four majors in the same season. One step away from the legendary finish line, Nole paid for the fatigue and tension accumulated during the previous months.

The combination of these factors allowed Daniil Medvedev to easily win the final and to forfeit the first Grand Slam of his career. According to recent statements by him, Djokovic will return to action in Paris-Bercy, to then play the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup finals.

Speaking in the latest edition of the German podcast 'Das Gelbe vom Ball', his former coach Boris Becker made some interesting remarks about Novak.

Boris Becker on Djokovic

"The incredible ovation Novak Djokovic received during the final was very good for him," Boris Becker said.

"That ovation should make it very clear that Novak is on the way to being loved in the final stretch of his career." Becker pointed out that people have always admired Djokovic's tennis but never really connected with the Serb on an emotional level until now.

"Respect for his incredible performances has always been there, but now people attach themselves with him emotionally," Becker added. Ahead of the Major, Djokovic had asserted that completing the Calendar Slam would be the "biggest achievement" of his career.

In that context, Boris Becker believes Djokovic is still coming to terms with the huge opportunity slipped through his fingers. "Novak is still digesting the tremendous opportunity he could not take advantage of in the last US Open," said the German.

"It became a major emotional problem for him, things did not go as expected." World No.1 Novak Djokovic will headline the squad of Team Serbia. He will also have Filip Krajinovic, Dusan Lajovic, Laslo Djere, and Miomir Kecmanovic on his team.

US Open 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev will be looking forward to winning the Davis Cup Finals 2021 now. He has got a strong squad as well as the team consists of the likes of Andrey Rublev, Aslan Karatsev, Karen Khachanov, and Evgeny Donskoy.
