World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is excited to return to the Davis Cup Finals as he is determined to lead Serbia to their second title in the competition. Djokovic participated at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals in 2019 but he didn't get the result he wanted as Serbia lost to Russia in the quarterfinal.
The Davis Cup Finals didn't take place last year and Djokovic admitted he felt "sad" over it. Djokovic was the last player to join the Serbian team in Innsbuck as he was playing at the Atp Finals. "It is great to be back with the Davis Cup team,” Djokovic said.
“We did not have Davis Cup last year so the last memory we had was a sad one. We were all very emotional because of that ending, but we are also very motivated to come back together and give it another go."
Djokovic, Serbia among the favorites
Serbia will be battling Austria and Germany for a place in the quarterfinal.
Djokovic led Serbia to their lone Davis Cup title in 2010 and now he wants to finish 2021 with a second Davis Cup title. “We knew that opportunities would come and here we are again. We are very good friends off the court, we get along very well, and I think the chemistry in the team is fantastic, and that is one of the essential ingredients for success.
“I was the last player to join the team, Tuesday was my first day, but I got the chance to practice with the guys and I can see the atmosphere is really good. “We are hoping for the best. We all have a lot of inspiration to play our best tennis for our country and for each other as well.
We support each other, while we have great friendships and great relationships within the team, which can only bring good things”. Djokovic failed to win a sixth ATP Finals last week after losing to Alexander Zverev in the semifinal.
