Former world No. 3 Marin Cilic believes he can deliver a good performance against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and potentially stun the Serb at the Davis Cup Finals. Croatia is set to battle Serbia for a place in the final at the Davis Cup Finals.
Cilic missed out on a great chance to beat world No. 10 Jannik Sinner on Monday as he lost after failing to serve out for the match in the second set. "I played a great match against Sinner. A few things didn't work but I believe I can fix them and play another great match against Novak," Cilic said, per 24 Sata.
World No. 279 Borna Gojo played a big part in Croatia reaching the semifinal as he stunned Australian Alexei Popyrin and Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. "Our performances in Turin lifted our confidence and drastically improved the team atmosphere.
Gojo showed that he is a great Davis Cup player and I hope his good performance will translate to the ATP Tour. On the other, Mate and Nikola are always ready to play a great match, especially this season," Cilic noted.
Djokovic praised Cilic
"But as I said, you know, these guys are great guys.
I have known Cilic, and we have had some big encounters over the years. I know him very well. Borna Gojo is one of the biggest surprises of competition, winning two out of two matches, beating Sonego in Italy, which was a very impressive win.
He's someone that is very young and just has a big serve, big game overall;" Djokovic said. The Serbs are the favorite to beat Croatia and Djokovic absolutely feels they can reach the final. "With the good chemistry that we have, I feel like we can win.
And of course we are intending to step out on the court and win every single match, no doubt. You know, we are very motivated for that one;" Djokovic underlined.
