Filip Krajinovic admitted Novak Djokovic needs more help from the rest of the Serbian team following a disappointing semifinal defeat at the Davis Cup Finals. Dusan Lajovic was stunned by Borna Gojo in the opening rubber of the tie but Djokovic beat Marin Cilic to force a decisive rubber.
Serbia's attempt to clinch a comeback win failed after Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic beat Djokovic and Krajinovic 7-5 6-1. "I am sad about the defeat, I hope we will also progress in singles to help Novak. I have a feeling that in the last few singles matches it didn't go the way we wanted, we didn't play the best.
I know that it is difficult for Novak to play both singles and doubles every time. That puts a lot of pressure on him, even though he handles it well. I hope that we will help him in the next few years, to form a strong doubles team, so that the players in singles can be more relaxed and concentrated on their matches.
We lack that," Krajinovic explained, as revealed on Sport Klub.
Mektic, Pavic thrilled to beat Djokovic
Djokovic is ranked at No. 1 in the world in singles while Mektic and Pavic are the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the world.
Mektic said Djokovic was showing why he was No. 1 but luckily they didn't play singles. "He [Djokovic] was showing that he was number one in the world in singles," said Mektic. “But luckily we didn’t play that sport, we played the sport with four people.
We’re so happy”. Pavic added: “It was a great win. We played a tough team. Obviously Novak is the best player in the world, we managed to do it. From the group stages to the quarters, to the semis, Borna and Marin played great matches, and unbelievable doubles. We’re super happy to be in the final and we’re ready now for the final”.
