Marin Cilic 'thrilled' after Croatia finally beat Novak Djokovic-led Serbia

Former world No. 3 Marin Cilic was thrilled after Croatia finally beat Serbia at the Davis Cup Finals. World No. 279 Borna Gojo stunned Dusan Lajovic in the opening rubber of the tie to give Croatia an early lead but Cilic failed to seal victory for Croatia as he lost to Novak Djokovic in the following rubber.

Cilic didn't deliver but No. 1 doubles team Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic did as they beat Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-1 in the decisive rubber to send Croatia into the final. "We did an outstanding thing, we finally beat them," Cilic said, as quoted on Vecernji List.

Djokovic routinely handled Cilic

As expected, Djokovic easily beat Cilic 6-4 6-2. “It was always gonna be a tough match against Marin. I know him very well. The first set was over an hour, close games. Just a very nervy start from both of us, we both knew the significance of this match.

Obviously winning the first set gave me a lot of confidence for the second. Now we’ve got a chance to play doubles. Croatia has the best doubles team in the world. We’ll do our best, may the best team win," Djokovic said after beating Cilic.

Gojo's win over Lajovic proved out to be the key in Croatia's victory over Serbia. “In the first set I was up 4-2 40-0, I was in control, I slipped in that game there. I got down on myself a little bit, but then the captain and the teams and the fans picked me back up.

Obviously Davis Cup is a special competition where the pressure is bigger on everyone and I managed to play some of my best tennis here at this tournament. I’m very happy that I managed to get those big wins, ranking wise, but for me it’s more important that I managed to get the point for the team," Gojo said after the win.
