World no. 1 Novak Djokovic finished an incredible season after Serbia lost to Croatia in Madrid's Davis Cup Finals semi-final round. The 20-time Major winner gave his best to keep his country alive, but he could not chase the title without help from anyone from the rest of the squad.
Despite Novak's four singles victories, other Serbia's players were far from their best, and Croatia used that in the semi-final clash to advance into the final thanks to their superior doubles squad. Djokovic understands they have to talk about the entire competition and draw conclusions on how to improve their level and fight for the title in the years to come.
A couple of days ago, Novak also revealed that he would focus on Majors and team competitions (ATP Cup and Davis Cup Finals) for the rest of his career, always wanting to help his country and battle in the national jersey.
The Serb secured three Major titles in 2021 but did not win any team competition, falling short at the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup Finals and looking to change that in the season ahead of us.
Novak Djokovic spoke about Serbia's Davis Cup Finals performance.
"The season finished today, and I do not regret any tournament that I played after the date you mentioned.
I give my best, as I always do, for the national team. There is extra meaning and importance for me and everybody involved. Unfortunately, it was not to be this time. One singles win is not enough. This kind of competition is cruel in a way.
It requires you to win every match or set you play because it counts. As the best second team, we got another opportunity to qualify and play quarters. We were unfortunate today, but that's a sport. What can you do? I do not regret anything in life.
I try to draw lessons from especially the challenging moments like this. As much as it hurts me personally and us as a team, these are usually the most significant opportunities to get stronger, grow and develop to be even a better person and a player.
Hopefully, we will learn from what happened during the Davis Cup Finals this year. There are many things we can improve individually and as a team. But the goal is always to go far in the Davis Cup competition because we all care about playing for our team and nation," Novak Djokovic said.
