World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was heartbroken after learning of the death of tennis legend Manolo Santana. Santana, a former four-time Grand Slam champion and World No. 1, passed away on Saturday at the age of 83. Rafael Nadal, the best Spanish tennis player in history, also paid tribute to the late tennis legend.
"It is heartbreaking to hear the news about Manolo Santana," Djokovic tweeted. “Sending my condolences and my prayers to his family and to all those who loved him, who are so many. Thank you dear Manolo for paving the way, we will miss you and celebrate always!
Rest in peace legend!" After Djokovic's name appeared at the entrance despite his refusal to reveal his vaccination status, rumors began to circulate that Tennis Australia was looking for ways for the Serb to enter. "Well the fact is, he's on the Australian Open entry list," Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge said on 9 News.
"And of course he is also in the ATP Cup in Sydney in the first tournament of the New Year. “If he passes [the criteria], then he can play. There is so much speculation right now that he must first answer those questions.
If he surpasses them, I think it's great that we have the world number one in Australia again."
Henin comments on Djokovic
Justine Henin believes that Novak Djokovic will struggle to be as commanding at the Grand Slams with “Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev establishing themselves as the most dangerous rivals”.
“Daniil Medvedev is taking off. Zverev – it will be the year for him… I think he’s ready to go for a Grand Slam in 2022, obviously we’ll still have to see how he does over the five-set question, but you get the feeling that at some point, it’s going to work out for him.
He has taken on a new dimension. Medvedev and Zverev have established themselves as the most dangerous rivals. There will be the return of [Rafael] Nadal. Obviously, Dominic Thiem will be back. We’re happy to see these players back.
And Novak Djokovic? What about his desire? We always have the feeling that Novak Djokovic’s appetite keeps growing. Will it continue like this? It is very difficult to say. He will still want to win. He certainly needs to recharge his batteries now.
It’s been a tough season. He knows who is going to get opportunities, so maybe he won’t be as dominant as he used to be. At least, that’s what we can assume. But Novak Djokovic, he’s full of surprises, sometimes hard to figure out, sometimes hard to predict. And so, it’s going to be a really exciting 2022 season”.
