2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli thinks Novak Djokovic is only obsessed about breaking the all-time Grand Slam record. Djokovic captured three Grand Slams in 2021 to tie Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on the all-time Grand Slam record list with 20 Majors.
Djokovic was on the verge of breaking the all-time Grand Slam record at the US Open but he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the final. "I think ultimately, what Novak wants is to beat the 20 Grand Slams record. I think it's the only obsession he is having and when he walked away from that defeat against Sascha, I didn't see him in a lot of anger, you know he was not massively broken down," said Bartoli on Tennis Majors, as revealed on Sportskeeda.
Djokovic broke several records in 2021
Djokovic broke the all-time Masters record, passed Federer for most weeks at No. 1 and clinched a record seventh year-end No. 1 finish. "The most important for him now was to beat Pete Sampras' record or finishing the year as World No.
1 and now it's just to get to 21 and 22 or more so that he makes sure that Federer and Nadal don't catch him back. I think that's going to be the only obsession he's going to have next year," Bartoli added.
Also, Bartoli spoke about how privileged tennis fans were to have Nadal and Federer for so long. "For 20 years, we've been very spoilt to have Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal coming with so different personalities that people could actually sit on one side or the other," Bartoli said.
"You either love Nadal or love Federer." Bartoli said Nadal has his own personality and changing it would be impossible. "Rafael Nadal has his own personality when he comes on court. He's just himself and you can't just ask somebody to just duplicate or replicate who someone used to be," Bartoli said.
