Former doubles world No. 1 Jamie Murray doubts he would be getting a medical exemption for the Australian Open if he was unvaccinated. On Tuesday, 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic announced he was granted a medical exemption to play the Australian Open.
After two months of speculating what would happen with Djokovic's participation at the Australian Open, it all came to an end after the Serb announced he was granted a medical exemption and that he would travel to Melbourne.
"I think if it was me that wasn't vaccinated I wouldn't be getting an exemption...but well done to him for getting clear to come to Australia and compete," Murray said, per Simon Cambers. "At the end of the day you kind of have to trust that he does has a valid reason for the medical exemption."
Djokovic announced the news on Instagram
"Happy New Year, everybody!
Wishing you all health, love, and happiness in every present moment and may you feel love & respect towards all beings on this wonderful planet," Djokovic said in an Instagram post. "I’ve spent fantastic quality time with my loved ones over the break and today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission.
Let’s go 2022!" Djokovic's participation at the Australian Open was in a bigger doubt after he withdrew from the ATP Cup. “It is not easy to play for Serbia without Djokovic,” Filip Krajinovic a few days ago at the ATP Cup.
“The expectations are very big. Whatever you do is not enough because he is No. 1 and the greatest of all time. I am sure he is watching us now and cheering for us”. Djokovic is a record nine-time Australian Open champion and he will be aiming to win his 10th title at Melbourne Park this month. Djokovic is also motivated to win the Australian Open and break the all-time Grand Slam record.
