Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic says Daniil Medvedev reaching the No. 1 spot is inevitable and adds he will be the first to congratulate the Russian when he makes it to the No. 1 ranking. Medvedev has been ranked at No.
2 since last year's March but that could change next Monday. If Medvedev wins Acapulco this week, he will surpass Djokovic at the No. 1 spot. Medvedev is the No. 1 seed in Dubai but Rafael Nadal is also set to play. Meanwhile, Djokovic is aiming to win his sixth Dubai title this week.
"He deserves to be No. 1. Eventually it's going to happen. If it happens this week, I'll be the first one to congratulate him," Djokovic said.
Djokovic has a good relationship with Medvedev
Djokovic beat Medvedev in the 2021 Australian Open final.
This year, Djokovic didn't play at the Australian Open and Medvedev reached back-to-back finals at Melbourne Park. After suffering a five-set defeat to Nadal in the Australian Open final, Medvedev texted Djokovic. Djokovic didn't want to reveal the content of the message but said he and the Russian have a good and respectful relationship.
“Daniil is an extremely good guy, we have a great and respectful relationship. I think he appreciates that I practised a lot with him and helped him when he was a junior, gave him advice and answered some questions. We were on the same plane when Russia played Davis Cup in Serbia, he was very thankful for that.
Our relationship keeps growing," Djokovic told RTS. “He texted me 45 minutes after the finals, which surprised me. Content of the message is private, but it was supportive, both ways. He is very authentic and speaks his mind on every stage, he is not always politically correct, which many people won’t like.
He reminds me of myself in that regard”. Djokovic was drawn to start his Dubai campaign against Lorenzo Musetti.
