Holger Rune reveals moment when he 'definitely earned respect' from Novak Djokovic

Rising Danish star Holger Rune says world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was surprised after he refused to retire during their US Open first round match and even though he was visibly struggling on the court. Last year, Rune won three qualifying matches at the US Open to qualfiy for his first Grand Slam main draw.

Rune didn't have much luck with his US Open draw as he drawn to face the top-ranked player in the world in his Grand Slam debut. Rune refused to go down easily as he fought extremely hard and it resulted in him taking a set off Djokovic.

Rune gave his absolute best to win a tight second set of their meeting but then was hit by cramps as Djokovic won 6-1 6-7 (5) 6-2 6-1.

Rune: I think I earned the respect of Djokovic

"After we played at the US Open, he was very surprised that I did not retire due to cramps.

I definitely think that I earned his respect that night and I am very happy for that because it is not easy to get it – Novak is the best in the world, which goes hand in hand with certain standards," Rune told Tennis Majors.

"We spoke a lot about the mental aspect of the game. He is also a human being, although he does not seem like a human when he plays sometimes. He has his feelings, just like any other person, but chooses to go the right way.

Those are details, he told me to be patient and to take the long way, and that it is going to be all right." Rune had a chance to spend some time with Djokovic at the Serbia Open in Belgrade. During one press conference in Belgrade, Rune praised Djokovic for always being willing to give advice to younger players.
