French tennis star Gael Monfils had a hilarious joke after losing an 18th consecutive match versus Novak Djokovic, saying the Serb should have let go of the joystick a long ago. Monfils has been one of the best players on the ATP Tour for over the past 15 years but he doesn't have a single win over versus Djokovic.
On Tuesday, Monfils met Djokovic for the 18th time in his career. Like in 17 previous matches, Djokovic again ended on the winning side as he defeated Monfils 6-3 6-2. After the match, Monfils had a hilarious response on Twitter.
When guys play FIFA and someone takes a 3-0 lead, the match is in most cases automatically over. Monfils - one of the biggest and best entertainers in the game - couldn't help himself but wonder why Djokovic is continuting to dominate him.
"Bravo Novak (Normally at 3/0 we let go of the joystick) We will try not to take Fanny like in ping-pong (21/ 0)," Monfils tweeted.
Monfils beaten in straight sets by Djokovic
Monfils had the first break points of the match but Djokovic saved two break points in the third game and one more break point in the fifth game.
Monfils paid the price for not realizing his break point chances as Djokovic earned the first break of the match in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Djokovic then routinely held on to his serve the rest of the way to win the first set.
After winning the first set, Djokovic started strongly the second set as he broe Monfils in the third game. In the seventh game, Djokovic collected his second break of the set to open a 5-2 lead. Djokovic faced two break points in the eighth game but saved them as he managed to serve out for the match.
Monfils' best chance at beating Djokovic came in Dubai in 2020, when he missed out on three match points. It remains to be seen if Monfils will get another chance at beating Djokovic this year.
