Casper Ruud shares classy message to Novak Djokovic after Rome defeat

Norwegian tennis star Casper Ruud congratulated Novak Djokovic after the Serb clinched his 1,000th ATP match win. In the Rome semifinal, Djokovic handed a 6-4 6-3 loss to Ruud. It was Djokovic's 1,000th win on the ATP Tour and Ruud showed his class after the defeat.

Djokovic is now the fourth player in the Open Era to enter the 1,000-wins club. "Congratulations on 1,000 wins. I'm glad that I have some part of your history," Ruud told Djokovic at the net.

Djokovic happy with how he played against Ruud

Djokovic started the match with an early 4-0 lead but failed to serve out for the first set in the eighth game.

However, Djokovic kept his focus and served out for the first set in the 10th game. In the second set, Djokovic was 2-3 down before claiming back-to-back breaks and winning four games in a row to seal the win in straight sets.

"I thought I played very well," Djokovic said after the match. "Started fantastic, 4-0. Then I did slow down a bit. I did drop my level and I wasn't feeling that great on the court for about 15, 20 minutes.

He used that, managed to get himself back in the first set. It was important to close it out in the 10th game, clinch the first set." After the match, Djokovic was grateful to everyone who celebrated with him the 1,000th victory.

"Thanks to the tournament and the crowd for celebrating the milestone with me," Djokovic said. "I've seen Roger and Rafa celebrate those milestones in the last couple of years and I was looking forward to get to that 1,000 myself.

I'm really, really blessed and privileged to have that many victories on the Tour. It's been a long time, ever since I won my first match on the Tour. Hopefully I can keep going and many more victories to come."
