Mats Wilander gives Novak Djokovic slight advantage over Carlos Alcaraz at RG

Former seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander says he is giving the slight advantage to Novak Djokovic over Carlos Alcaraz as he thinks the Serb's preparation for the French Open has been better. Alcaraz won back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Madrid but sat out Rome.

On the other side, Djokovic was beaten by Alcaraz in the Madrid quarterfinal but then won Rome the following week. Rome was Djokovic's first title of the year and he made it all the way without a dropped set. Going into the French Open, Wilander thinks Djokovic is in a slightly better position.

“I think Novak’s preparation for the French Open is perfect. I would much rather have Novak’s preparation than Carlos Alcaraz’s preparation going into the French Open. Winning Rome, take a week off and then come into Paris," Wilander said on Eurosport’s Ruud Talk programme, per Eurosport.

Wilander: Alcaraz is qucikly gaining the locker room respect

Alcaraz has proved that he is capable of playing on a high level both on hard and clay. After winning his maiden Masters title on the hard courts of Miami, Alcaraz lifted his second Masters title in Madrid.

“I always feel that it’s really important to have good periods on tour. Especially when you do what Alcaraz has done, which is to win on hard courts, and then you go and win on clay. That’s a confidence boost for the player and it gives respect to the locker room," Wilander said.

“Maybe compared to someone that wins two clay court tournaments in a row, because it carries you as a player with variety, it carries you all the way to the US Open. You win Miami, you now have a chance to win the US Open because you have won on hard court”.

Also, Wilander noted that last year's French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas can't be overlooked and that the Greek could definitely win it all at Roland Garros.
