French heritage tennis brand Lacoste shared a warm message to Novak Djokovic on his 35h birthday. On Sunday, Djokovic turned 35 and Lacoste made sure to let the Serb know how they feel about him. Djokovic, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, originally joined Lacoste in 2017.
With the current deal, Djokovic is set to be a part of the Lacoste family until at least 2025. "So happy to have a legend like you in our #TeamLacoste. Happy birthday @djokernole!" Lacoste tweeted.
Djokovic: Lacoste was pressured to terminate our contract
In Paris, Djokovic revealed that media and clients wanted Lacoste to terminate their contract following the Australia visa debacle.
Earlier this year, Djokovic was denied participation at the Australian Open because of his vaccine stance. Once it became clear that Djokovic was unvaccinated, many were curious to see how would his sponsors react. Lacoste was under pressure to terminate their contract with Djokovic but they refused to go that route and Djokovic is grateful to that.
“Particularly, Lacoste. We have been in regular contact, mostly Edoardo (Artaldi, one of Djokovic’s agents), but I have personally spoken with the head of Lacoste. They understood the whole situation, everything that was happening.
As their global ambassador, I am important to them, but their position was not easy. They have told us that they have been under pressure from the media, from some clients that maybe weren’t happy with me staying with the company," Djokovic told Serbia reporters, per Tennis Majors.
“Challenges always present themselves, so to say, but I think they made a good choice and I am grateful. I will try to represent the Lacoste brand just like I did up until now, in the best possible way. After all, it is a brand with great tradition, one of the greatest in tennis, and I am proud to wear the crocodile on my shirt."
