'Novak Djokovic is always the favourite because...', says ATP ace

Daniil Medvedev improved his balance on grass this season to 8-2 this Wednesday with a strong start in the Mallorca Championships. The World No. 1 came from a set down to defeat Aslan Karatsev 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 as he seeks his third final on grass this year.

"It was difficult to play with rhythm," Medvedev said of the day's windy conditions. "It seemed like a lot of points were only for whoever managed to put the ball on the court. It wasn't easy, but I'm happy to win because that's the most important thing."

Medvedev landed just 48% of his first serves in the first set, but improved to 68% and 69% in the final two sets as he took control of the match. The 26-year-old dropped just one set en route to the 2021 Mallorca title and could win his first title of the 2022 season at the same venue.

"Last year was amazing. I played great tennis," he said. "Hopefully I can do the same this year. I like Mallorca, so I hope I can stay as long as possible in the tournament." Medvedev now faces fifth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, who advanced when Nick Kyrgios withdrew due to injury.

Medvedev earned his first win against the Spaniard in their fourth ATP Head2Head meeting last week in Halle. "He's a great player... It's really hard to beat him all the time," Medvedev anticipated. "[He's a] great player and I hope we can put on a good game."

Novak Djokovic had won his maiden title at SW19 back in 2011 when he defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Medvedev on Novak Djokovic

In an interview with Spanish media outlet Dairio de Mallorca, Medvedev picked Novak Djokovic as one of the best players in the history of the game on grass.

“Novak is always the favourite. He has won the last three Wimbledons that have been played. He plays very well on grass. If we talk about the best players in history on grass, I would place him at the top, although I have not seen Borg or Sampras play”.

The 2021 US Open champion further picked Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini as the other two favorites for Wimbledon 2022. The 26-year-old Russian added, “From my generation, Federer and Djokovic are the best. Of course, Nadal can win any tournament he plays in and Berrettini is playing at a high level. Speaking of favourites, Djokovic, Berrettini and Nadal”.
