Laura Robson shares thoughts on Novak Djokovic's US entry ban

Laura Robson doubts the United States government will make a last-moment change that will allow Novak Djokovic to participate at the US Open. Djokovic hasn't been vaccinated against COVID-19 and that's why he can't enter the United States for the US Open.

“There is something he could do about it, of course, but ultimately tennis is such a minor blip in the US government’s policy,” Robson told Tennis365. “I can’t imagine that they will change it for one person, as nice as it would be for the tennis world.

You would think (he would be favourite if he played). The way he came through at Wimbledon, he just never really looked in doubt. Every time he was in trouble he found another gear or five more gears. There’s not a lot we can do about him not being there, but it’s a shame for the tournament”.

Robson picks Daniil Medvedev in the absence of Djokovic

With Djokovic likely missing out on the US Open and Rafael Nadal having played just one match this summer on hard, Robson feels it's Medvedev who has the best chance at winning rhe final Grand Slam tournament of the year.

“With Djokovic not there I’d go for Medvedev on the hard courts,” Robson said. “On hard courts and especially at the US Open where he got so much room on the big stadiums to get incredibly deep on returns and create so much time for himself, for New York I’d have Medvedev as favourite”.

Last year, Medvedev clinched his first Grand Slam title after beating Djokovic in the US Open final. At that time, Djokovic was aiming for a record 21st Grand Slam, as well as a Calendar Grand Slam. But the pressure was too much for Djokovic and Medvedev took the full advantage. For the first time in his career, Medvedev is returning to a Grand Slam as the defending champion.
