Novak Djokovic posts classy message to Marin Cilic after Tel Aviv Open final

Novak Djokovic admitted he was very happy after winning his 89th career-title and also told Marin Cilic it was a pleasure to meet him in another ATP final. On Sunday, Djokovic defeated Cilic 6-3 6-4 in the inaugural Tel Aviv Open final.

"Very happy to win this new title! Thank you to @telavivopen and all the fans and tennis supporters for the amazing support and reception that my team and I received during this week in Israel," Djokovic wrote on Instagram.

"Marin, it is always a special pleasure and challenge to play against you. I'm glad that we can still fight for trophies in our sport despite having a great number of years of a professional career on our resume. Good luck, king."

Djokovic continues his dominance against Cilic

Following his latest victory over Cilic, Djokovic now owns a 19-2 head-to-head versus the Croatian.

This past Sunday, they were playing in an ATP final against each other for the third time in their respective career. When Djokovic and Cilic met in the 2009 Beijing final, the Serb earned a straight-set win. Nine years later at the Queen's Club, Cilic defeated Djokovic in the Queen's final.

Four years after losing the Queen's final to Cilic, Djokovic made sure to avoid the same scenario in the Tel Aviv final. Even though Cilic lost, he wasn't dissatisfied with his week in Israel. During the tournament, Cilic celebrated his 34th birthday.

“It was a fantastic week for me celebrating my birthday," Cilic said. "I didn’t have a chance to celebrate with so [many people before], but next time I’m buying drinks, everybody!” Meanwhile, Djokovic is now 3/4 in finals played this year.

After losing his first ATP final of the year in Belgrade, Djokovic won his following three finals at the Rome Masters, Wimbledon, and Tel Aviv.
