Could Novak Djokovic return to Swiss Indoors Basel this year?

The Swiss Indoors Basel organizers may be looking into the possibility of bringing Novak Djokovic to this year's tournament edition, per Swiss media.

Djokovic, 35, first played at the Swiss Indoors Basel in 2014, when he was ousted in the qualifying first round. Between 2009 and 2011, Djokovic made three consecutive Basel main draw appearances.

After beating Roger Federer in the 2009 Basel final, Djokovic ended runner-up to Federer in the 2010 Basel final. In his third and last Basel appearance, Djokovic made the semifinal before losing to Kei Nishikori. This year's edition of the Swiss Indoors Basel is scheduled to take place between October 24-30.

Why Djokovic might be interested in playing Basel?

This year, Djokovic missed two Grand Slams and four Masters events. After winning last week's Tel Aviv Open, Djokovic also went all the way at the Astana Open. "So the Grand Slam season is finished, but [there is also the ATP Finals in] Turin that I still didn't qualify for, I'm hoping I can make it, so that I'm able to play there," Djokovic said.

In Israel, Djokovic admitted that missing out on several tournaments this year will likely lead to him playing some tournaments at this part of the year that he usually doesn't play. "It's going to be probably the case more now than it ever was for me where I'm going to play some tournaments that are normally not fitting in my schedule, because my schedule is not what it was for 20 years.

So I'm kind of more flexible, that's why I came in Israel, I'm going to Kazakhstan and then I'll see what I play. Still the schedule is to play Bercy and Turin but it depends what the reaction of my body is this week and next week and then I'll sit down with my team and decide what my schedule is for the rest of the season.'
