Carlos Alcaraz says he definitely wants Novak Djokovic to be participating in the biggest events. Djokovic, 35, didn't compete at the Indian Wells Masters and he is also missing the Miami Masters. On Sunday, Alcaraz saw off Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final to lift his first title in the desert.
Following his Indian Wells victory, Alcaraz also replaced Djokovic at the world No 1 spot. "Yes, of course. I mean, Novak is one of the best players in the world. That’s obvious. You know, I will say that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
I really wanted to play against Novak again. We miss him on tour, and hopefully to have him back very, very soon. But yeah, of course it could be amazing to play against him again," Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz on replacing Djokovic at the top spot
"Well, it feels great to be back on the No.
1, you know. Of course every player on the ATP wants to be No. 1, and for me it’s a dream come true again. Obviously being in front of such great players like Novak, like the top players, for me, it’s an amazing feeling," Alcaraz noted.
Last September, Alcaraz took the advantage of Djokovic's absence from the US Open and lifted his first Grand Slam title. Also, Alcaraz became the world No 1 for the first time in his career after winning the US Open. But some weren't impressed with the way Alcaraz became a Grand Slam champion and the world No 1.
When Djokovic was asked about Alcaraz winning the US Open in his absence, the Serb said the Spaniard definitely deserved all of his success. With that move, Djokovic showed his class. Last May, Alcaraz edged out Djokovic in an absolute thriller at the Madrid Masters.
