Reilly Opelka thinks tennis-wise Carlos Alcaraz is already "up there" with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz, who turned 20 last Friday, is quickly establishing himself as a dominant force in the game. Alcaraz has had wins against Djokovic and Nadal, while he is also having lots of success against other top players in the game.
Opelka, one of the best American male tennis players, admits Alcaraz is simply astonishing. Also, Opelka mentioned how easily Alcaraz beat world No 9 Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-2 in the Miami Masters quarterfinal.
Opelka on Alcaraz: Tennis-wise he's up there with Djokovic and Nadal
"I don't think we'll ever get a guy to beat Alcaraz.
Like, Taylor Fritz is the best American hands down right now. He's just so consistent, he takes care of everyone he's supposed to. But now, you know, with Alcaraz coming up and Holger Rune. Look what happened in Miami. As great as a ball striker as Fritz is, Alcaraz is so fast.
Tennis-wise, he is up there with Novak and Rafa," Opelka said on Tennis Channel's Inside-In podcast, per Sportskeeda. Opelka basically just reiterated Fritz's words from Miami. After losing to Alcaraz in their first-ever meeting, Fritz spoke extremely highly of the Spaniard.
"It's not even about what I saw from Carlos today. I have seen it from him for a while, as he had all the tools already a year ago. Carlos can move forward, drop shot and lob you; he is incredibly fast and hits well from both wings.
It's rare to see someone his age without the need to work much on various aspects of his game. Carlos has many ways to construct the point and tools to win a match against different rivals. I do not think Rafa, Novak or Roger had that at his age.
His level in the opening three games was incredible, overwhelming me with brilliant shots from every part of the court," Fritz said after losing to Alcaraz in Miami.
