Novak Djokovic reveals one thing he absolutely wants to avoid in US Open final

Novak Djokovic says he does not really want to think that he is a win away from getting to Grand Slam title No 24 because that may lead to him underperforming in the US Open final. Djokovic, 36, is set to clash against Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final.

Djokovic, 36, clinched a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title at this year's French Open final but then suffered a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final when everyone expected him to win. Two years ago, everyone expected Djokovic to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four Grand Slams in the same season.

But then, Djokovic crumbled under the pressure in the 2021 US Open final and suffered a straight-set defeat to Medvedev.

Djokovic: I want to avoid underperforming

"Not really, to be honest. I'm not thinking about that. I'm aware that, you know, these kind of occasions where I play in a Grand Slam final at this stage is almost like a present that, you know, I need to accept and try to make the most out of it.

I was very close to make the 24 in London, but, you know, lost to a better player on that day in a close five-set match. So I understand I'm, you know, every time in a Grand Slam final it's another shot for history, you know, and I'm aware of it, and of course I'm very proud of it.

When I did that in the past, like, '21 you know, because when I did that in the past, like, '21 and the opportunity and I underperformed. So I don't want this to happen again, and I'll try to, you know, just focus on what needs to be done and tactically prepare myself for that match," Djokovic explained. It remains to be seen if Djokovic can beat Medvedev and add one more title to his already all-time Grand Slam record.
