Tennys Sandgren took a sarcastic shot at a fan who appeared to suggest that Novak Djokovic was only looking for his personal benefit when he signed up to represent Serbia during the Davis Cup Finals group stage. Just days after winning the US Open, Djokovic hopped on a plane and went to Valencia to help Serbia clinch a place for the Davis Cup Final 8.
Djokovic's efforts received praise but some weren't too impressed. "He is required to play Davis Cup in order to be allowed to play the 2024 Olympics, but keep acting like he’s Jesus Christ Jr. for doing something that serves his own interests, nobody can stop you," a post from one X account read.
Sandgren responded: "'He represented his country just so he could represent his country some more!' Yes."

Sandgren comes to Djokovic's defense
When Djokovic landed in Valencia, he told Serbian media that his "priority" for the remainder of the season was to lead Serbia to the Davis Cup title.
"My priority will be winning the Davis Cup. I hope it will come step by step. The first step was taken without me by winning against South Korea with 3:0 two days ago. I came here to contribute to the overall triumph of Serbia.
The goal is to qualify for the final tournament in Malaga and to go where we didn't play last year," Djokovic told Sport Klub.

On Friday, Djokovic defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Serbia went 2-0 in their group and also sealed a place for the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga, which takes place in late November.
"I'm on cloud nine, as you can see with everything that's has been happening lately on the tennis court. Playing for Serbia, for my country, is something completely different. It's a huge responsibility and pressure but also an incredible privilege and honor, so I'm really glad that I was able to contribute with a crucial point to qualify for Malaga," Djokovic said.
