American tennis legend Jimmy Connors thinks Nick Kyrgios has the talent for major things but his inability to fully focus and commit to tennis is costing the Australian of not being an extremely successful superstar like Novak Djokovic.

Kyrgios, 28, drew major attention to his name from the moment he started his career. In 2014, a 19-year-old Kyrgios upset Rafael Nadal en route to making the Wimbledon quarterfinal in his debut at The Championships. The following year, Kyrgios also managed to beat Roger Federer in their first-ever meeting at the Madrid Masters.

When Kyrgios showed up in 2014, he was tipped to do major things in tennis. But the enormous expectations and pressure were seemingly too much for Kyrgios, who said in 2015 that he didn't like tennis and that would rather play basketball.

Connors on why Kyrgios isn't a Djokovic

"If you’re gonna be the best, you see Novak Djokovic, nothing gets in his way. He doesn’t wanna play basketball, he concentrates and focuses really just on his tennis and winning.

Nick lets his mind wander to other things too. And if you’re gonna be the best, I would think there are some guys that are different. Maybe Kyrgios is one of those guys but putting all your energies into being the best is important.

Maybe he’s satisfied with success and what he’s done in his abilities and everything that he has going for him right now. I’m not criticizing, I’m just carrying on the conversation about what his abilities are and where he thinks he should be and could be," Connors said on the Advantage Connors podcast.

Last year, Kyrgios won the Australian Open men's doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis and also made his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon. This year, Kyrgios has been limited to just one tournament due to knee and wrist injuries. If everything goes well, Kyrgios should play again at the start of the 2024 season.
