Coach Goran Ivanisevic acknowledged Carlos Alcaraz is Novak Djokovic's main rival for the world No 1 spot but also added he believes the Serb has what it takes to reign the throne for a few more years. After winning this year's Australian Open, Djokovic overtook Carlos Alcaraz at the top spot and returned to the top position for the first time since 2022 June.

Since then, Djokovic and Alcaraz have been going back and forth in their battle for the world No 1 position. This year, Djokovic was a finalist in all four Grand Slams and was victorious on three occasions. "I can't say that there aren't serious rivals from this younger generation, but these younger tennis players oscillate quite a bit, and that's not always a good sign," Croatian tennis legend Ivanisevic told Sportske Novosti.

With Rafael Nadal missing pretty much the entire 2023 season, Alcaraz stepped up and created the next big rivalry in men's tennis with Djokovic. By beating Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, 20-year-old Alcaraz became the first and lone player to beat the Serb in a Grand Slam this year.

When asked if Alcaraz's was Djokovic's biggest threat for the world No 1 spot, Ivanisevic explained: "It will stay that way. There are other good tennis players, especially Daniil Medvedev, and Novak's big opponent could be the Italian Jannik Sinner, who also knows how to get into a crisis, but it seems that he absolutely does not suit Alcaraz, and Novak could also have problems with him.

Although it is actually too big of a word to use as long as the things in men's tennis are like this, it is difficult to envision someone who could compete with Djokovic for (the world No 1) position over a longer period." Alcaraz is determined to beat out Djokovic for the Year-End No 1 award but the Serb currently leads the list and he is the favorite to clinch the award for the eighth time.
