Carlos Alcaraz applauded Jannik Sinner for beating Novak Djokovic in a high-quality match and also backed the Italian to win a Grand Slam and reach the world No 1 ranking in the near future. On Tuesday night, Sinner - who is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world - clinched his first win over Novak Djokovic after beating the world No 1 7-5 6-7 (5) 7-6 (2) at the ATP Finals in Turin.

The match lasted just over three hours of play and it will go down as one of the best matches of the year. "As a huge fan of tennis, it was one of the best matches of the year. It was a high quality of tennis. It was an unbelievable match.

Really close one. I think everybody enjoyed that match. Probably a few of them was a lot of nerves watching it. For me, I really enjoyed this match. It was unbelievable. Honestly, it would be really tough if I face Jannik in Italy.

The crowd is going to be behind him. But who knows. I would love to play that battle against him. Every match that we face each other is an amazing match, so let's see," Alcaraz said of Sinner's win over Djokovic.

When asked if Sinner could make a big Grand Slam breakthrough in 2024, Alcaraz said he believes that could happen.

"Absolutely. I have no doubts about it. He is one of the those guys who are able to win a Grand Slam. I think he's going to reach the world No 1 in 2024 or he's going to give himself the chance to reach the No 1. That's my prediction," Alcaraz said.

Alcaraz and Sinner have the best rivalry among the younger players. After seven meetings, Sinner has a 4-3 head-to-head against Alcaraz. Alcaraz and Sinner could potentially meet for the eighth time in the knockout stage of this year's ATP Finals.
