Stan Wawrinka admitted he entered the 2015 French Open final feeling "nervous" and being aware that Novak Djokovic was "the big favorite" but still had the full belief that he could go out and challenge the Serb.

After becoming a Grand Slam champion at the 2014 Australian Open, Wawrinka reached his second Major final at the 2015 French Open.

At the time, Djokovic managed to finally clinch his first French Open win over Rafael Nadal and he entered the French Open final determined to finally win his first title at Roland Garros. Since Djokovic had waited for so long to get past Nadal at the French Open, the general feeling was that there was no way the Serb would let this opportunity slip.

And Djokovic indeed played well, but Wawrinka delivered one of the best performances of his career as the Swiss claimed a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 win after having a near-flawless outing and firing winners from all parts of the court throughout the entire final.

Wawrinka recounts beating Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final

In an interview with Express-Sport, Wawrinka shared he was "really nervous" when entering the court but then took a moment to calm and collect and his focus quickly returned.

“Of course he was the big favorite, he didn’t lose a match I think 30 matches in a row, he was No. 1, beat Rafa so he was the big favorite entering the court,” Wawrinka told Express-Sport.

“But I also knew that level-wise I was ready to fight him, I was ready to play against him. Physically I was ready, I was feeling my best I could for the final. So I was really focused on the game, on my game plan to really push my game through this match and to try and push him every shot. And at the end, I played one of my best matches of my career, the best level I played I think on a clay court and it was in the final of the French Open so quite happy with it.”

After beating Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final, Wawrinka also defeated the Serb in the 2016 US Open final for his third Grand Slam title.
