Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune often train together and share a good friendship out of the box. The Dane has stated on several occasions that the Serbian champion has given him excellent advice and has improved thanks to his support.

The two will face each other in the Wimbledon round of 16 next Monday in what will soon become the sixth direct clash. Djokovic is 3-2 ahead and has won the last two matches at the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy and the Nitto ATP Finals, but Rune has always put him in trouble.

Even in their first match - held in 2021 at the US Open - the native of Gentofte managed to bring home a set against him by showing off in the world of adults.

Novak Djokovic praises Rune

Novak Djokovic has always struggled to beat Rune, who has a style of play very similar to that of the Serbian champion.

"I’m very happy with him, he’s a great guy. He has always behaved very well with my team and I always try to be at his disposal, both for training and for some advice. His mother and sister have always been very nice to us, we get along, we respect each other and I think we have similar tennis styles.

When it comes to playing and competing on the field, we both have that inner fire. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of energy on the field on Monday," Djokovic said at a press conference about Rune. "He’s a spectacular player, who loves big events and playing these games.

I’ll need my best tennis to win. Holger always had a great work ethic. If he sees something wrong, he works to improve it. That’s what I’ve always liked most about him.

He’s a complete tennis player. He probably lacks a bit of continuity in terms of results compared to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, but is ready to do great things. Maybe he needs a little more time mentally to mature and understand how to play at certain times, but he already has enough experience to be only 21 years old".
