ATP Barcelona contacted Novak Djokovic, who refused to play there

After Novak Djokovic's early defeat in Monte Carlo, ATP 500 Barcelona contacted the World No. 1's managerial team to convince him to play in the Spanish tournament next week. 'We have done our job but we do not want to give fake expectations and the truth is that there is not any possibility' - revealed tournament director Albert Costa to Mundo Deportivo. Costa also added that the main obstacle of this decision by Djokovic is caused by 'a calendar question.

Players like Djokovic or Federer play very few events and in the ATP 500 tournaments like our choose more the hard-courts where it's easier for them to gain 500 points in the rankings. It's understandable, as a player I did the same choosing to gain more points on clay.' Main seeds of the event are Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori, David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet.
