Rio de Janeiro state prosecution names Novak Djokovic in civil litigation

Rio de Janeiro's state prosecutor has filed a civil case against Novak Djokovic in relation to an exhibition event he had participated in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2012. In addition to Djokovic, former footballer Dejan Petkovic and his company Deki10, the state of Rio de Janeiro itself and another company ADMA which was responsible for Djokovic's participation in the event.

The petition is seeking for recovery of dues from these parties to the state of Rio de Janeiro. The sum totals to over two million Brazilian Real (over $800,000). The case also highlights that these two companies need not have acted as a go-between Djokovic and the state for the tennis player to participate in the event.

The state could have directly negotiated with the former world no. 1 for his participation. This is quite a twist on the initial development that followed the aftermath of the event. Djokovic, who was to receive about $1.1 million for participating in the event, received only around 40% of the promised amount, which had prompted him to file a writ in 2015 to try and get his dues cleared.
